History Timeline
In 1928, AFGO had its humble beginnings when Grandpa Eddie opened a car radiator repair shop called Central Auto Radiator on Thompson Avenue in Long Island City, Queens, New York.
In 1954, Harvey Udell took over the family business and expanded it by creating a new division known as Berdell Industries, which not only repaired car radiators but also air conditioning coils.
By 1985, Berdell Industries was ready to explore opportunities in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry. This marked a significant shift, and Harvey Udell retired, passing the torch to his son Glenn Udell, who played a pivotal role in expanding the company.
In 1986, Glenn’s brother, Blaine, joined the Berdell Industries team, solidifying the family’s presence in the business. Together, they began manufacturing various heat transfer equipment, including HVAC coils, shell & tube heat exchangers, tube bundles, and generator coolers. The company continued to grow, evolving into a full-fledged enterprise with a workforce of over 100 employees.
In 1995, the Udell brothers, Glenn and Blaine, took a significant step by establishing AFGO Mechanical Services, Inc. Under their leadership, AFGO started installing replacement units and new HVAC systems throughout the New York City area. Simultaneously, they successfully formed a comprehensive HVAC service department, providing round-the-clock service and maintenance to their clients.
AFGO marked a significant milestone in 2004 when the company moved its headquarters from Woodside to Long Island City. This relocation represented a major expansion for the company and allowed them to operate from a more corporate and central location, further enhancing their presence in the HVAC industry.
In 2015, Glenn Udell retired from the company, marking the end of an era. Blaine Udell, his brother, transitioned into the role of President of AFGO, taking on a leadership role to continue the company’s success in the HVAC industry.
AFGO demonstrated resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Classified as an essential service provider, the company continued to operate safely. AFGO played a crucial role in servicing and repairing equipment for the medical and telecommunications communities during this challenging time, contributing to the broader effort to combat the pandemic.
During 2021, AFGO collaborated with Microsoft to develop customized software for its clients. This enabled our team to efficiently access, analyze, and respond to real-time data, ensuring proactive issue resolution. Technology plays a pivotal role in our commitment to client customization and operational effectiveness.
