What Is a MERV Rating? Does It Matter?

Many of us are seeking ways to reduce global air pollution. It’s essential:

Poor air quality makes it much more likely that employees will get sick … cognitive performance will drop, and productivity with it.
It is predicted that by 2060, there will be 3.8 billion lost working days annually due to the effects of (outdoor) air pollution.

Clean Air Is Good for Business

Outdoor pollution can be seen; it has an odor. But indoor air pollution can be odor-free and invisible — and even more harmful to customers and employees. Caring about indoor air quality (IAQ) is no longer just a good idea. It’s essential to the sustainability of commercial enterprise operating in physical locations.

Minimizing airborne pollutants, especially bacterial and viral, is a focal point for most organizations. Commercial and retail industries are prioritizing IAQ.

Minimum efficiency reporting values (MERVs) are numbers representing an air filter’s ability to capture contaminants and airborne particles. The rating system uses microns (µm).

MERV Ratings: Higher Is Better

MERV ratings measure the performance of air filters. The MERV rating system was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). A higher rating means your air filters can capture smaller and more varieties of particles. Efficiency ratings are:

  • 1-4 – less than 20% (particles 3.0-10.0)
  • 6 – 49.9% (particles 3.0-10.0)
  • 8 – 84.9% (particles 3.0-10.0)
  • 10 – 64.9% (particles 1.0-3.0); 85% or greater (particles 3.0-10.0)
  • 12 – 80-89.9% (particles 1.0-3.0); 90% or greater (particles 3.0-10.0)
  • 14 – 75-84% (particles 0.3-1.0); 90% or greater (particles 1.0-3.0)
  • 16 – 75% or greater (particles 0.3-1.0)

Filters with MERV ratings of 1-8 can only capture larger airborne particles. You can rank MERVs:

  • 1-4 is low
  • 5-13 is medium
  • 13-16 is high-efficiency and can capture airborne viruses

A MERV rating of 14-16 is preferred.

What You Have Is What You Get — Only Better

In New York City and surrounding areas, we have a lot of older mechanical installations in our older builders. And that’s okay because everything old can be new again.

Outdated HVAC systems cost more. They need much more maintenance and more frequent emergency repair, and they use a lot more energy. A large equipment replacement isn’t always affordable. And many times, it isn’t necessary.

AFGO is the NYC company specializing in HVAC retrofitting and redesign. We can integrate the system you need with the system you have, for long-lasting, efficient, and safe heating and cooling.

Our commercial services include:

Since 1928, AFGO has been a leader in top-of-the-line technology throughout NYC, Long Island, and Westchester County. And because technology is moving at warp speed, we ensure our experienced heating and cooling professionals receive the continuing education required for today’s commercial HVAC and refrigeration services.

If you have questions about your commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration system, call 718-489-9870 or contact AFGO Mechanical Services, Inc.

At AFGO, we don’t believe in one-size fits all HVAC systems…
we succeed by providing our customers with alternative HVAC solutions.
