How Does the R-22 Phaseout Impact Building Owners?

The new year is coming. While many people expect a time full of sequins, strangely shaped glasses, unfulfilled resolutions, and fireworks, that may not be all that’s coming our way. The new year of 2020 has a lot to do with something you probably don’t expect, and probably don’t think about much: R-22 refrigerant. Refriger-what? R-22 is what’s responsible for absorbing and removing heat from the air in your building. However, starting January 1, 2020, R-22 will no longer be produced in the United States. This is because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared R-22 a significant threat to the ozone layer.

So why does this matter to you? If your building has an older HVAC system, it’s probably using R-22, meaning you’re going to be in need of an HVAC replacement. In order to guide you through this process and help inform you of what you’re going to need to do in the upcoming months to prepare for the phaseout, the professionals at AFGO Mechanical have put together this blog post. Keep on reading to stay ahead of the R-22 phaseout, and make sure you can celebrate the new year without Freon on your mind!

If you need assistance or have questions about how AFGO Mechanical can help you with the R-22 phaseout, call us now at (718) 478-5555 or contact us online.

What Does R-22 Actually Do?

A lot of older HVAC systems, including car AC systems, mini-splits, heat pumps, and central air conditioners, use R-22. Starting in 2010, the EPA deemed it illegal to use R-22 in new HVAC systems, but the production of Freon was not banned entirely. Now, it is, starting on January 1, 2020. Basically, R-22 is the component that is responsible for keeping the air your AC pumps out cool and refreshing. If you know that your HVAC system is on the older side, or you know for a fact that it uses R-22, you have to start thinking about system replacement now. Luckily, AFGO Mechanical is here to help you with that seemingly daunting task!

I Know My HVAC System Uses R-22. What Do I Do Now?

You essentially have two options here. You can wait a bit longer and see if your system breaks down in the coming weeks before 2020. Or, you bite the bullet and start looking into your HVAC replacement options right now. Not only will you alleviate the stress of getting a new system right when the new year starts, but you’ll be able to enjoy your holidays even more knowing that your HVAC system is good to go. Not to mention, there are a ton of other benefits that come with updating your old AC system to a brand-new, modern one:

Newer HVAC systems are way more energy-efficient. This can help save you a lot of money on your monthly energy bills.

• Your system will be quieter.

• Your system will be more modern, sleek, and technologically advanced.

• Your system will be better for the environment, specifically the ozone layer!

We get it. HVAC replacement is stressful. But we promise you: In the end, it’s worth it. You’ll be helping more than your building, more than your customers that visit it. You’ll be helping the planet run more healthily. Oh, and your wallet will be happy, too!
